Pipistrel won a competition to supply 194 aircraft to the Indian Air Force (IAF), Indian Navy (IN) and National Cadet Corps (NCC).

We are delighted to announce that Pipistrel just signed the World’s largest single contract about the delivery of light aircraft with the Indian Armed Forces. Pipistrel emerged as the winner to supply 194 aircraft to the Indian Air Force (IAF), Indian Navy (IN) and National Cadet Corps (NCC). 

Globally renowned light aircraft manufacturer with 26 years of aircraft design and production experience will equip Indian Air Force (IAF), Indian Navy (IN) and National Cadet Corps (NCC) with its modern, carbon-fibre Microlight aircraft Virus SW 80 “GARUD”, as a result of “Request for Technical and Commercial Proposal (RFP) for Microlight Aircraft” Air HQ/S 96066/4/ASR/MoD2395/DPB/AW-Air(T)/MA/Vol-1 dated April 13th 2011. Pipistrel was selected as the winning bidder in the tendering competition among eleven international Original Equipment Manufacturers / Authorized Vendors.

The design chosen by the respective Indian parties is a two-seat trainer, capable of take-off and landing on prepared as well as semi-prepared surfaces. Made from advanced carbon-fibre composite materials it is capable of carrying 2 crew members and their equipment.
The aircraft is powered by an 80 HP aviation certified engine and can reach a maximum speed of more than 220 km/h, fly for more than 3 hours and climb to altitudes in excess of 6000 meters. As a testament to safety, Pipistrel equipped the aircraft designed to be used for training of Flight Safety and Air Wing Cadets with a special a Ballistic Parachute Rescue System and several other safety enhancing features, such as Energy Attenuation Seats and a KevlarTM reinforced cockpit cell.

Pipistrel’s Virus SW 80 “GARUD”, named after a bird that appears in Hindu mythology and is the mount of the god Vishnu, was thoroughly tested. All the aircraft participating in the tender were tested in the extreme Indian conditions such as high temperature and humidity, extreme altitudes and similar. “Garud” had successfully cleared all the evaluations at the Field and Maintainability Evaluation Trial.

Ivo Boscarol, the General Manager and owner of Pipistrela, signed a Delivery Contract for 194 aircraft today in New Delhi, India, with the representatives of the Indian armed forces.
»This is without a doubt the largest contract in the entire 26-year history of Pipistrel. We will produce either 6 or 7 aircraft each month for the Indian Army. This means that for the next two and a half years, half of Pipistrel’s production capacity is sold out,« said Boscarol after signing the contract. After the aircraft »Garud« had been chosen for technically the best and most suitable among all the applicants and after the final price had been determined, it took over two years of negotiating all the details of the contract.

Pipistrel will begin with the deliveries to more than 100 locations all over India in 8 months time. All 194 aircraft must be delivered within a period of thirty months after the first delivery. The contract also binds Pipistrel to deliver a further 100 aircraft after the third year, should the buyer want so. All together this means that Pipistrel will produce almost 300 aircraft. To ensure smooth and uninterrupted operation of the “GARUDs”, Pipistrel will equip IAF, IN and NCC with spare engines, ground support equipment and tools, special multi-year spare parts packs, extended 10-year product support, as well as train a large number of aircrew, instructors and technical staff.

The Indian personnel will be trained by a Pipistrel’s partner company from Slovenia, the »Pipistrel Academy« which trains pilots and new instructors. They will teach pilots how to fly the new aircraft and prepare the Indian instructors to perform further education themselves. Pipistrel will also train the mechanics, which will then provide continuous technical support and regular maintenance of the aircraft. Pipistrel will not need to need to compensate sales with any offsets nor will they have to produce or assemble the aircraft in India.

Pipistrel produced well over 1300 different aircraft which fly in more than 80 countries on all continents. With the widest product range of Light Sport Aircraft, Pipistrel won the title of Europe’s most innovative company in 2010 by EBA and claimed the 2011 NASA Green Flight Challenge with World’s first all-electric four-seater Taurus G4. The latest flagship Panthera is the only General Aviation four-seater available with a conventional, hybrid and all electric powertrains.
Pipistrel is EASA approved aircraft designer (DOA 21J.524) and certified aircraft producer (POA SI.21G.0002).

Svetovno priznani proizvajalec letal s 26 leti izkušenj na področju načrtovanja in izdelave letal bo opremil IAF, IN in NCC s sodobnimi letali iz karbonskih vlaken Virus SW 80 “GARUD” kot rezultat zmage na natečaju “Request for Technical and Commercial Proposal (RFP) for Microlight Aircraft Air HQ/S 96066/4/ASR/MoD2395/DPB/AW-Air(T)/MA/Vol-1” iz Aprila 2011.

Pipistrel je bil izbran kot zmagovalni ponudnik na natečaju v mednarodni konkurenci enajstih različnih načrtovalcev in proizvajalcev letal in letalskih delov oziroma avtoriziranih letalskih zastopnikov.

Zmagovalni izdelek je dvosedežno šolsko letalo, izdelano iz sodobnih kompozitnih materialov. Prevaža lahko 2 člana posadke in vso njuno opremo. Letalo poganja 80-konjski certificirani letalski motor. Doseže lahko hitrosti preko 220 km/h, leti več kot 3 ure brez pristanka in se povzpne na višino preko 6000 m. Uporablja lahko tudi travnate steze in nepripravljene terene. Letala bodo kadeti uporabljali za šolanje letenja in letalske varnosti, zato je Pipistrel opremil vsa tudi s posebnim balističnim reševalnim padalom (Ballistic Parachute Rescue System), ki v primeru nesreče rešuje hkrati celotno letalo in oba potnika, katerima ni potrebno skakati iz kabine. Poleg tega ima letalo še več drugih varnostnih sistemov, na primer sedeže s funkcijo absorbcijo sile in potniško kabino, ojačano s plastjo Kevlar-jaTM.
Pipistrelov Virus SW 80 “Garud”, poimenovan po mitološki ptici ujedi »Garuda«, ki jo v hindujski mitologiji jaha bog Višnu, je bil temeljito preizkušen. Indijci so vsa letala, ki so se potegovala na natečaju, testirali v ekstremnih lokalnih pogojih – visoki vročini in vlažnosti, na izrednih nadmorskih višinah ipd.

Ivo Boscarol, direktor in lastnik Pipistrela je danes v Indiji v New Delhiju s predstavniki indijske vojske podpisal pogodbo o dobavi 194 letal. »To je nedvomno daleč največja pogodba v vsej 26-letni zgodovini podjetja Pipistrel. Za indijsko vojsko bomo vsak mesec izdelali šest oziroma sedem letal. Na ta način imamo za prihodnji dve leti in pol razprodano polovico trenutnih zmogljivosti naše proizvodnje,« je po podpisu povedal Boscarol.
Potem, ko so letalo »Garud« izbrali za tehnično najbolj primerno in je bila izpogajana končna cena, so se več kot dve leti pogajali tudi o drugih podrobnostih pogodbe.

Pipistrel bo z dobavami začel čez osem mesecev na več kot 100 različnih lokacij po vsej Indiji, vseh 194 pa mora biti dobavljenih znotraj obdobja tridesetih mesecev po prvi dobavi. Pipistrel se je moral pogodbeno zavezati, da dobavi po tretjem letu še dodatnih 100 letal v kolikor bo naročnik to zahteval, tako da bo Pipistrel verjetno dobavil skoraj 300 letal.
Da bo omogočil gladko in neprekinjeno delovanje “Garudov”, mora Pipistrel za obdobje prihodnjih desetih let zagotoviti za IAF, IN in NCC tudi vse rezervne dele in tehnično podporo. Opremiti jih morajo z rezervnimi motorji, orodjem za tehnično podporo, hkrati pa usposobiti večje število osebja za posadko in servis.
Pilote v Indiji bo usposabljalo Pipistrelovo partnersko slovensko podjetje »Pipistrel Academy«, ki se ukvarja s šolanjem pilotov in inštruktorjev. Indijsko osebje bodo naučili leteti na novih letalih in prešolali indijske inštruktorje, da bodo lahko skrbeli za nadaljnje izobraževanje sami. Pipistrel bo izšolal tudi mehanike, ki bojo novi floti lahko nudili nepretrgano tehnično podporo in skrbeli za redno vzdrževanje.
Pipistrelu ne bo treba opraviti tako imenovanih protidobav oziroma kupiti indijskih izdelkov za določeno vrednost in tudi ne letal izdelovali ali delno sestavljati v Indiji.

Pipistrel, ki ima trenutno 90 zaposlenih, je v 26 letih svojega obstoja izdelal že več kot 1300 različnih letal in motornih zmajev, ki letijo v več kot 80 državah na vseh celinah. Kot proizvajalec z najširšo paleto izdelkov iz razreda Light Sport Aircraft, je Pipistrel leta 2010 osvojil Evropsko Poslovno nagrado (European Business Award) kot najinovativnejše podjetje v Evropski Uniji in zmagal na natečaju ameriške NASE leta 2011 s svojim letalom Taurus G4, ki je bilo sploh prvo popolnoma električno štirisedežno letalo na svetu. Njihov najnovejši vrhunski tehnološki izdelek, štirisedežna Panthera, pa je edino letalo v kategoriji Generalne Aviacije, ki je na tržišču na voljo s tremi različicami pogona: bencinskim, hibridnim ter popolnoma električnim.
Pipistrel je pooblaščeni načrtovalec letal z dovoljenjem Evropske Agencije za Letalsko Varnost EASA in pooblaščeni izdelovalec certificiranih letal ter ultralahkih letal.
